110KV HY5W-84/221 Zinc Oxide Arrester

A zinc oxide surge arrester, commonly known as a zinc oxide lightning arrester, is a vital component in electrical systems designed to protect equipment and infrastructure from the damaging effects of lightning strikes and overvoltage conditions. 
Comprising a series of zinc oxide varistors housed within a protective enclosure, these surge arresters provide a low-resistance path to ground for excess electrical energy, effectively diverting transient voltage surges away from sensitive equipment. 
The heart of a zinc oxide surge arrester is the zinc oxide varistor, which exhibits a highly nonlinear voltage-current characteristic. During normal operation, the varistor remains in a high-resistance state, allowing the flow of small current. However, when subjected to a sudden increase in voltage, such as that induced by a lightning strike or switching surge, the varistor rapidly transitions to a low-resistance state, shunting the excess energy to ground.
Zinc oxide surge arresters offer several advantages over traditional silicon carbide arresters, including higher energy absorption capability, faster response times, and improved reliability. Additionally, their compact design and robust construction make them suitable for installation in various environments, including overhead lines, substations, and industrial facilities.
